Gabriele Roberto

Gabriele is the first Italian composer who has been awarded with the Japan Academy Prize, the most prestigious prize in Japan for a film music composer. Based in Tokyo, he works for movies, animations, TV commercials and he writes arrangements for J-pop bands published by Sony, Universal, Warner, EMI and Columbia. After his Diploma in Composition achieved in Italy he completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Composition at the Royal College of music in London studying with Joseph Horovitz. During his studies he won the “Major Van Someren Godfery Memorial Prize”, Composition competition published by the Royal College. As for concert music, many of his pieces written for different ensembles have been performed in London and Europe in International Festivals. Five of his works are published by “RAI TRADE”, the Italian music publisher of the national broadcasting corporation. Gabriele’s musical interests have always been extended to the film scoring. He collaborated as assistant of composer Ezio Bosso in the movie by Academy Award winning Director Gabriele Salvatores, titled “Quo vadis, Baby”. Since November 2005 Gabriele begins to work for GrandFunk Inc., leader Japanese music production company. He scored the orchestral soundtrack for the movie « Memories of Matsuko » by Director Tetsuya Nakashima and thanks to this work he won the Japan Academy Prize 2007. The colloboration with Director Nakashima has been extended to the his next movie entitled « Paco and the Magical Piture Book » starring Yakusho Koji (Babel, Memories of a Geisha), Satoshi Tsumabuki (Tokyo Drift). Gabriele worked in the team that scored the soundtrack for the popular Japanese animation 'Devil May Cry' (based on the world famous PlayStation game) which has been dubbed in English, French, German and Spanish. The DVD of Devil May Cry reached number one in the animation DVD sales chart in the United States. Outside Japan Gabriele began a creative collaboration with the eccentric Hong Kong Director Pang Ho Cheung scoring the movie « Exodus ». The collaboration will be extended to the Director's new movie entitled 'Now Showing'. Gabriele’s work is published by Universal, Columbia, Warner , Victor, RedAlert Records.
